Syracuse, New York

Syracuse is the fifth largest city in New York, and boasts a population of over 145,000. The city is considered the economic and educational hub of Central New York as it is home to Syracuse University, a major research university; the Upstate Medical University and Hospital, the city’s largest employer; and several smaller colleges and professional schools. Syracuse is also the permanent home of the New York State Fair.

Syracuse was an industrial hub beginning in the late 1800’s continuing through the 20th century. Central New York was home to a large number of manufacturing plants where iron and steel, electrical components, firearms, chemicals, textiles, paper, and other business and consumer goods were processed. These businesses brought prosperity to the area, and to the employees that helped keep the companies running.

Many of the companies in the Syracuse area that were the primary employers during the industrial boom were household names like Bristol-Meyers in East Syracuse, General Electric in Auburn, Chrysler, Crucible Steel, Carrier and Oberdorfer Pumps, in Syracuse, Alcan and Lockheed Martin in Oswego, the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station/Power Plant in Scriba and Revere Cooper in Rome, to name just a few.
