Dr. Grunberg received his M.D. degree from Cornell University Medical College in 1975. He trained in internal medicine at the University of California San Francisco Hospitals and in medical oncology at the Sidney Farber Cancer Institute. He served on the faculty of the University of Southern California from 1981 until 1993, when he joined the faculty of the UVM College of Medicine. Dr. Grunberg serves on the Vermont Cancer Center Protocol Review Committee and Clinical Research Oversight Committee. He is a former Chair of NCI Initial Review Group Subcommittee G (Education). He is presently the Editor of the Proceedings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, a member of the Board of Directors of the Northern New England Clinical Oncology Society, and Treasurer of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer.
Dr. Grunberg's research interests are in developmental chemotherapy and early clinical trials of new anti-cancer agents. His work has spanned early clinical trials of cytotoxics, biologics, antiemetics, and differentiating agents. Present efforts include development of new and more effective treatment strategies for lung cancer, and head and neck cancer. He also continues a major effort in supportive care and symptom management, including pharmacologic interventions, evaluation of patient and healthcare professional perceptions, and pharmacoeconomic analysis.
