Biography

Dr. Hedy Lee Kindler is the Director of the Mesothelioma Program and an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Section of Hematology/Oncology and a Member of the Cancer Research Center at the University of Chicago.

Dr. Kindler is an internationally recognized expert in new drug development for mesothelioma. She chairs the Mesothelioma Program of the Cancer and Leukemia Group B. She serves as a member of the Executive Committee of the International Mesothelioma Interest Group and is on the Science Advisory Board of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. She is a member of many other professional societies, including the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, the American Association of Cancer Research, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology, where she currently serves on the Cancer Research Committee.

Dr. Kindler is the author of numerous scientific publications (including peer-reviewed papers, reviews, book chapters, journal issues, abstracts, and internet publications). She serves on the Editorial Boards of Clinical Advances in Hematology & Oncology, and Targeted Therapies, and is a reviewer for many oncology journals. In 2006 became an Associate Editor of the journal Lung Cancer. Dr. Kindler is a highly sought after public speaker and has given over 200 scientific lectures.

Her expertise and commitment to advancing cancer therapy has been recognized through many awards including the Mimi Ashton/ALCASE Award for Outstanding Patient Care (1998) and the University of Chicago Cancer Research Center Research Award (2000-2002). Dr. Kindler is also listed in "Best Doctors in America" (2003-2004), in Consumer's Research Council of America "Guide to America's Top Physicians" (2004-2005), in Academic Keys "Who's Who in Medical Sciences Education" (2005), and in Castle Connolly Medical Ltd, "America's Top Doctors for Cancer" (2005). Dr. Kindler's father died of mesothelioma in 2001; this experience has given her a personal perspective on the challenges faced by mesothelioma patients and their families.

Dr. Kindler attended Yale College, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She received her M.D. degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1989. Following her internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, Dr. Kindler completed her fellowship in Medical Oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. After 3 years as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York, Dr. Kindler joined the faculty of the University of Chicago in 1999. She is currently the Director of the Gastrointestinal Oncology Program at the University of Chicago, in addition to her leadership role in the Mesothelioma Program.

Dr. Kindler's major research interests focus on clinical trials of novel drugs for mesothelioma and gastrointestinal malignancies. She has designed and led some of the most innovative clinical trials using novel targeted agents for mesothelioma. She is especially interested in angiogenesis inhibitors and other drugs that target the unique biology of mesothelioma. Other interests include research on targeted therapies for pancreatic cancer and other gastrointestinal malignancies.
