MesotheliomaHelp.net is proud to offer ten (10) scholarships to deserving students in colleges and universities throughout the United States. It is our hope to help the educational efforts of students while raising awareness for mesothelioma and its cure. Mesothelioma is a disease that has affected many; both young and old, over the past century. The ten scholarship amounts are listed in the box labeled Scholarship Amounts in the column to the right and will be distributed after the winners have been notified on November 5, 2012. Submission deadlines are fast approaching so make sure to get your applications submitted and essays published early. Good luck!
Type of Scholarship
The winners of this essay contest will be awarded a check from the law firm of Belluck & Fox, LLP. These funds must be used to pay for college tuition and / or education-related expenses.
One (1) essay per student is allowed.
This essay contest is open to undergraduate and graduate students who are currently enrolled in a college or university located within the 50 United States or the District of Columbia. U.S. territories are excluded.
Mesothelioma is a terminal cancer diagnosed in close to 3,000 Americans each year. The only established cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. Most victims were unwittingly exposed to asbestos at work or while serving in the military. Others developed mesothelioma because of exposure from family members coming home from work with their clothes covered in asbestos fibers.
The average survival time after a mesothelioma diagnosis varies from four to 18 months.
Choose one essay topic:
- A mesothelioma survivor’s personal story.
- A history of asbestos use in American manufacturing/industry.
- The latest developments in the treatment of mesothelioma.
The essay must be no fewer than 750 and no more than 1,500 words long.
Deadlines & Posting
You have two options for posting your essay:
University blog or website – deadline is October 12, 2012, by 10 p.m. ET.
Contestants may choose to post their essay to a blog or webpage available through their college or university. However, the contestant is responsible for determining whether the school permits the posting of the essay to a school-sponsored or provided blog or webpage.Once your essay is posted and a link is provided (see “Linking” below), you must notify us by email at email@example.com and provide the URL where your essay is posted. Please use the words “Essay Posted” in the subject line.
Personal blog or website – deadline is September 21, 2012, by 10 p.m. ET.
If a university blog or webpage is unavailable, the contestant may post their essay on their personal blog or website up until September 21, 2012. After that date, your essay must be posted on a .edu webpage or it will be disqualified.Once your essay is posted and a link is provided (see “Linking” below), you must notify us by email at firstname.lastname@example.org and provide the URL where your essay is posted. Please use the words “Essay Posted” in the subject line.
The contestant is solely responsible for any expenses associated with the contestant’s essay, including the expense of posting or publishing the essay on a blog, webpage or website.
Your readers may want to know more about this deadly disease. We recommend including at least one link to www.mesotheliomahelp.net so that readers can learn more about this particular cancer. There is no required format for this link, but one example is to have the word “mesothelioma”, “mesothelioma cancer”, or “asbestos” that appears somewhere in your essay hyperlinked to an appropriate page within the www.mesotheliomahelp.net website so readers can click on it and learn more about the disease.
* No inappropriate links or advertisements should appear on the webpage or blog page where the essay appears.
- Essays will be judged by the partners at Belluck & Fox, LLP. Winners will be selected on November 1, 2012.
- Submissions will be judged on content, grammar, style, and originality.
- Judges will look for clear, original, articulate writing that is logically organized and well-supported.
Winners will be notified via email by November 5, 2012.
