Dr. Larry R. Kaiser is the John Rhea Barton Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery, as well as the Surgeon-in-Chief, for the University of Pennsylvania Health System. His area of interest and expertise is Thoracic Oncology, specifically lung cancer, malignant mesothelioma and mediastinal tumors. Dr. Kaiser heads the Thoracic Oncology Research Laboratory working closely with Steve Albelda, M.D. of Pulmonary Medicine. Work in the laboratory focuses on gene therapy of thoracic tumors. A program project grant from the National Cancer Institute funds the laboratory effort.
Dr. Kaiser is also the Principal Investigator of Penn’s grant from the National Emphysema Treatment Trial (NETT) and he is on the Executive Committee for the national trial. Dr. Kaiser is a member of all the major surgical societies including the American Surgical Association, the Society of University Surgeons, the Halsted Society, the Society of Clinical Surgery, and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. He serves on the editorial board of the Annals of Surgery, the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the Annals of Surgical Oncology and Contemporary Surgery.
He has authored or co-authored more than 300 papers and 9 books, including Mastery of Cardiothoracic Surgery, The Surgical Review, and the Atlas of General Thoracic Surgery. He is recognized nationally as one of the outstanding thoracic oncologists having built one of the largest general thoracic services in the country.
