Phillip Connell, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology and a member of the Cancer Research Center.
Dr. Connell is an expert in radiotherapy with a particular focus on sarcomas, thoracic cancers (including mesothelioma), and pediatric malignancies. He was born and raised in the Boston area. He completed his undergraduate education at Tufts University in Massachusetts and attended medical school at New York Medical College. Following his internship training in New York, he moved to Chicago and completed a residency in radiation oncology at the University of Chicago. He has since joined the faculty of our department, and his main clinical specialties include radiotherapy for thoracic cancers and pediatric malignancies.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Connell is very active in cancer research. He received laboratory training in cancer biology through a National Cancer Institute fellowship. His ongoing research program is working to develop new medications that can improve the efficacies of radiotherapy and common chemotherapeutic drugs.
He has received several awards including the American Society of Clinical Oncology Merit Award, American Brachytherapy Society Research Award, Roentgen Society Research Award, Samuel Hellman Teacher of the Year Award, and American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology Junior Faculty Fellowship Award. Dr. Connell has authored numerous medical reports and textbook chapters, and he serves as a reviewer for several medical journals.
