Dr. Aliya Noor Husain is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Chicago Hospitals.
Dr. Husain has special interests in surgical and pediatric pathology as well as lung and heart pathology. She is a core surgical pathologist responsible for pediatric autopsies, neonatal and pediatric M & M conferences, a teaching conference for pediatric residents, and pediatric Grand Rounds. She is currently the contracted pathologist for central review of a multicenter prospective trial of immunosuppressive regimen in lung transplant recipients being researched by Drs. S. Bhorade and E. R. Garrity. In addition, she is responsible for pre- and post-transplant heart pathology (surgical and autopsy) and a weekly chest oncology and mesothelioma conference.
After receiving her undergraduate and Master's degrees from King Edward Medical College in Lahore, Pakistan, in 1980, Dr. Husain completed an internship in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Hospital in Lahore, Pakistan. Following her internship, she completed her work as a Resident in Pathology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine, Tampa, and further served as a Resident in Pathology AP/CP at Loyola University Medical Center in Illinois. She was an Associate Professor and Professor in the Departments of Pathology and Pediatrics at Loyola University Medical Center until 2001, when she came to the University of Chicago Hospitals as an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology.
Dr. Husain has served on numerous committees, currently serving on the Membership Committee of the Society of Pediatric Pathologists as well as the Pre-clinical Curriculum Review Committee for the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. She is a member of numerous professional societies, including the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and the Pulmonary Pathology Society. She has served as the President of the Chicago Pathology Society since 2001, and has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Registry of Anatomic Pathologists since 2000. In addition, she has hosted multiple Annual Meetings of the Midwest Pediatric Pathology Society.
Dr. Husain is the author and co-author of over 100 abstracts and publications. She is also the author and co-author of many educational materials and letters, including numerous book chapters. She has presented papers and made other presentations in both North America and her native Pakistan, as well as in Europe. She has served as a reviewer for the Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and for Pediatric and Developmental Pathology.
Born and raised in Pakistan, Dr. Husain came to the United States in 1981 to further her education and career. Dr. Husain has been married for twenty years and has three children, ages 17, 15 and 11. Her eldest daughter studies engineering at the University of Illinois, Champaign. Dr. Husain lives with her family in Hinsdale, IL, where she enjoys reading and bicycling outside of work.
