NYC Mesothelioma Law Firm of Belluck & Fox, LLP to Award $10,000 in College Scholarships
New York, NY, August 14, 2012 — The New York City law firm of Belluck & Fox, LLP, and Mesotheliomahelp.net have announced a scholarship contest with a top prize of $5,000 for essays about mesothelioma, a terminal cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.
Belluck & Fox and Mesotheliomahelp.net will award 10 prizes with a total of $10,000 in scholarship money for students enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities as of October 1, 2012.
Belluck & Fox, LLP, is a nationally recognized law firm that represents individuals with mesothelioma and other asbestos-related claims.
MesotheliomaHelp.net is one of the Web’s primary resources for information on malignant mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. The website provides in-depth coverage of the disease, as well as detailed information about the available diagnostic procedures and treatment options for mesothelioma sufferers.
To participate in the essay contest, a student must write an original 750- to 1,000-word essay about mesothelioma and post it to either a personal blog or website or to one sponsored by their college or university. Essays must address a mesothelioma sufferer’s personal story, the history of asbestos use in American industry / manufacturing or the latest developments in medical treatments for mesothelioma.
“About 3,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma every year and an equal number of mesothelioma patients die every year,” said Joseph W. Belluck, a founding partner of the Belluck & Fox law firm. “Our legal practice helps mesothelioma victims and their families defray some of the financial costs of this disease.
“The scholarship money from our essay contest is another way to help younger people to learn about this disease,” Belluck said. Students do not have to have a personal connection to mesothelioma to enter the contest, he added.
Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs, chest or abdomen that is highly aggressive and is resistant to many cancer treatments. The disease is caused by exposure to asbestos, which most often occurred at an industrial or manufacturing workplace many years prior to the victim’s diagnosis.
The median survival rate for pleural mesothelioma patients is six to eight months. Surgery and other therapies can extend a mesothelioma patient’s life, but the disease cannot be cured.
“Thankfully, mesothelioma is relatively rare, but the downside of that is that it gets less attention and research funding than other cancers,” Belluck said. “We look forward to having our college students’ essays about mesothelioma on university websites and other sites, where they can educate people about this disease.”
In addition to the $5,000 top prize, the Belluck & Fox / MesotheliomaHelp.net Scholarship Essay Contest will award a $2,500 second prize, a $1,250 third prize, $500 for fourth place, $250 for fifth place and 10 prizes of $100 each as honorable mentions.
Essays must be posted by October 12, 2012, if the contestant is publishing the essay to an .edu website. The deadline for essays posted to a personal webspace is September 21, 2012. Rules and an application for the contest are available at the Belluck & Fox MesotheliomaHelp.net website.
