NC Company Partners With Livestrong to Offer Support to Mesothelioma and Other Cancer Patients
When someone is diagnosed with mesothelioma, an asbestos-caused cancer, more than likely there are hundreds of questions running through their mind, such as: What does this mean? What will happen next? What kind of treatment will I need? Where do I go for treatment? Now, through a partnership formed last year between Livestrong and NavigateCancer Foundation (NCF), cancer patients can get answers to these and other questions with a phone call to experienced, credentialed oncology nurses.
Mesothelioma is a rare, serious cancer that occurs in individuals exposed to airborne asbestos fibers. Finding information and sound medical advice can be difficult. Without access to a mesothelioma specialist, knowing where to start can be challenging. NCF hopes to fill that void by “providing one-on-one contextual support, education, [and] translation” services.
With a mission to improve cancer care and improve understanding, NCF is a non-profit service that provides “cancer patients with the ability to understand, navigate and advocate through their illness,” free of charge.
“Cancer is complicated, and we want to do all we can to ensure survivors are able to be their own advocates and ultimately improve their quality of care,” said Sharon Bigelow, executive director of NCF.
In the press release announcing the partnership, the North Carolina company said the partnership allows them to reach cancer patients nationwide. Bigelow added, “with LIVESTRONG, we’ll be able to provide more survivors with a solid roadmap from diagnosis to recovery and reach a wider audience nationwide.”
Livestrong is perhaps the most recognizable name in fundraising for cancer research and for patient advocacy. Founded by testicular cancer survivor and seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong, Livestrong has raised more than $400 million to serve people affected by cancer. Livestrong will direct patients to NCF for support.
Chris Dammert, LIVESTRONG’s Director of Navigation Services said of the partnership, “Together with NCF and our other key partners, we now offer a comprehensive set of services to cancer survivors throughout the care continuum.”
