Men Grow Moustaches to Raise Research Funds for Prostate Cancer, Mesothelioma and Other Cancers that Affect Men

Livestrong announced last week that they have received a $2.6 million donation for the global fight against cancer from Movember.  Movember is an international charity movement engaging men to grow moustaches every November to raise awareness and funds for men’s health and cancer affecting men.  Mesothelioma, a rare, asbestos-related cancer, is one cancer that is frequently found in men in their late 60s to 70s who typically began working around asbestos-containing materials in their 20s.

Mesothelioma diagnoses are most often made after symptoms appear and the disease has progressed to an advanced stage leaving the patient with life-threatening complications.  The cancer is highly aggressive and is resistant to many cancer treatments making it a difficult disease to treat effectively.

Cancer research is needed to find treatments and cures for incurable cancers such as mesothelioma, and it requires significant amounts of time and money.  Events such as Movember that specifically targets raising awareness of cancer are critically important to educate the public about mesothelioma, and to provide the public with an opportunity to donate.

Movember and LIVESTRONG are working together to use these funds to create unique programs for men that will help them with their emotional and practical needs as they battle cancer.  The two charities envision developing a “comprehensive, national program with local components that will help men navigate the best treatment options, support them through treatment and help their quality of life post-treatment.”

Mesothelioma is diagnosed in less than 3,000 Americans each year.  With the rarity of the disease it is often difficult for patients to find physicians and medical facilities properly equipped to manage their condition.  The formation of a male-focused support network will be extremely beneficial to mesothelioma sufferers and their families.

Since its inception in 1997, Livestrong has raised more than $400 million for the fight against cancer.  Movember was just started in 2003, and since that time they have raised approximately $180 million.

See Movember for more information about their campaign to reduce the number of preventable male deaths by cancer.
