Updated Breakaway from Cancer Website Offers Search Navigator Tool for Easy Access to Leading Online Mesothelioma Resources

Amgen, a leading human therapeutics company in the biotechnology industry dedicated to helping people fight serious illness, has updated their Breakaway from Cancer website to provide cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers a ‘one-stop shop’ of essential cancer resources.  The site now includes their “cancer resource navigator” tool providing access to more than 100 leading cancer websites.  Mesothelioma sufferers can find over 35 links to information from organizations including the Lung Cancer Alliance, the National Cancer Institute and Johns Hopkins University.

Mesothelioma, an orphan disease which is diagnosed in less than 3,000 Americans each year, is a serious lung disease primarily caused by exposure to asbestos fibers.  Due to the relative rarity of the cancer, finding reliable, timely and useful information can be challenging.  Breakaway from Cancer believes “no one should have to fight cancer alone” and offers this service for mesothelioma and cancer patients to find educational materials, support services programs and resources free of charge.

Breakaway from Cancer focuses on four primary areas of support for cancer patients and their families: Prevention, Fighting Cancer, Financial Assistance, and Survivorship.  Amgen partners in each of the four areas with nonprofit groups that offer valuable support, education and advocacy resources to the cancer community.  Their ultimate goal is to help the patients “take an active role in their recovery and stay focused on living with their disease.”

The Prevent Cancer Foundation, supporting the Prevention area, is the only cancer-related organization in the nation completely focused on reducing the risk of developing cancer and early detection.  As with other environmental cancers, the most unfortunate aspect of being diagnosed with mesothelioma is that it is an entirely preventable disease.  For those who have already been exposed to asbestos, however, early detection of the disease can positively influence their survival by increasing treatment options and improving their quality of life while battling the cancer.

“Nearly everyone has been touched by cancer and felt the burden of this disease; however, far fewer individuals are aware of the full spectrum of help available,” said Carolyn R. Aldige, president and founder, Prevent Cancer Foundation. “We are proud to team up with Breakaway from Cancer to offer consolidated resources like those on the new website to support patients.”
