Stand Up 2 Cancer Telethon Scheduled for September 10th – Tune In to Join the Cause to Raise Funds for Mesothelioma and Other Cancers
All of the major television networks are standing by to broadcast the Stand Up 2 Cancer (SU2C) Telethon to raise funds for the fight against cancer. Scheduled for September 10, 2010, at 8:00pm EST, the live, one-hour fundraising event will be simulcast commercial-free on ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, Discovery Health, HBO, Showtime, VH1 and other cable channels. The telethon will raise funds that will accelerate innovative cancer research that is critically important for finding a cure for mesothelioma and other cancers.
Although ongoing research is being conducted to find a cure for mesothelioma, it is still considered to be an incurable disease in the medical community. Early detection improves survival chances, but most often diagnoses are not made until symptoms appear and the disease has progressed to an advanced stage leaving the patient with life-threatening complications.
The star-studded event features a growing lineup of actors, musicians, athletes and journalists including Neil Diamond, Herbie Hancock, Kris Kristofferson, Lady Antebellum, George Clooney, Gwyneth Paltrow, Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Renée Zellweger, and Livestrong’s founder Lance Armstrong. The broadcast will be hosted by network news anchors Katie Couric, Diane Sawyer and Brian Williams.
100% of the monies raised goes directly to grants supporting cancer research. The Circulating Tumor Cell (CTC) Chip Dream Team is an example of one of the dream teams funded after the 2008 telethon with some of the over $100 million raised. The team developed a chip to allow physicians to identify the genetic “fingerprint” of a patient’s cancer cells that can benefit mesothelioma patients by personalizing treatment options.
